Summary

  •  Today, medical education all over the world is faced with major problems such as lack of infrastructure and manpower, rapid development of technology, commercialization of health, lack of coordination between health policies and medical education, and increasingly apparent differences between institutions and educators. In order to ensure standardization in medical education, criteria must be developed, policies must be implemented to make standards functional in institutions, and the quality of medical education, which is affected by many economic, social and societal factors, must be evaluated. Accreditation systems in medical education aim to ensure that medical school graduates are ready to become physicians, to monitor educational content and methods, to meet students’ learning needs, and ultimately to increase the quality of medical care provided to patients. An important goal of accreditation processes is to support continuous institutional development and to ensure the dissemination of good educational practices. In order for the accreditation process to contribute to the development of medical education, accreditation institutions and medical schools must first be accepted as partners of an educational alliance working together towards common goals. Principles regarding accreditation standards should be prepared with broad participation and reviewed periodically. In order for faculties to use the accreditation process as an opportunity to improve medical education, there must be a formative self-evaluation process. Thus, the accreditation process can be both an opportunity and a tool to improve medical education.
