Summary

  • In this article, the community-oriented medical education approach and community-based medical education are comprehensively examined within the context of social accountability of medical schools. Community-oriented medical education refers to the planning and implementation of educational programs aimed specifically at addressing the priority health needs of the community. Community-based medical education aims to enhance students’ competencies in understanding the community better and developing solutions to health problems by enabling them to learn within the community and real-life environments. Both approaches complement each other and stand out as significant tools for medical schools to fulfill their social obligations. The concept of social accountability denotes the responsibility of medical schools to respond to the priority health issues of the community. This concept is directly related to community-oriented and community-based educational approaches and becomes institutionalized by being integrated into strategic objectives and institutional action plans. The evaluation of social accountability in the accreditation of educational programs has an impact that increases awareness. The article reviews examples of good practices in community-based education. It emphasizes that medical schools should use these educational models in a comprehensive and strategic manner to effectively meet their social obligations.
