Summary

  • The “Age-Friendly” approach is a model targeting healthy, active, and successful aging. In this article, the historical background of the concept, implementation requirements, the current situation in the world, and the improvement needs are explained from a public health perspective.Aging of the societies and the population movement from rural to urban areas, there is a greater need for the “Age-Friendly” model. The model can be applied in cities at the macro level as well as at the micro level at home and in other living spaces. “Age-Friendly City” practices initiated by the World Health Organization in previous years have accelerated the motivation of many cities in the world today. In more than 50 countries, more than 1600 cities are in this category in the world. Although there is a tendency to increase in number, inequalities in implementation and the fact that there are regions where the model has never reached reveal that there are serious problems related to the implementation of the concept at the global level. It is recommended that existing problems be identified with scientific methods and appropriate interventions be made with an interdisciplinary perspective.
